Grid-Connected Solar Rooftop / Ground-Mount Solutions

Grid-Connected” solar power system refers to a Solar Power Plant which is integrated or connected to the Utility Grid. The system is also referred to as “Grid-Tied” or “On-Grid” system.

a) Grid-Connected System main characteristics :

Solar Power Plant works only if there is a reference

Grid provides a reference voltage to the Solar Inverter

A grid-connected system works only when the grid power is ON. The Solar inverter is halted when the grid power is cut off for whatever reason (maintenance or grid failure).

In general, the generated electricity is first consumed by the load and any excess energy is fed back or “exported” to the grid.

b) Energy Export Options :

This depends upon the solar policy of the state.

(i) Net Meter / Net-Feed-IN :

Net-Meter: The exported energy will be treated as “Energy Banked”. The utility provides Net-Metering (offsetting the energy imported against the energy exported)

Net-Feed-IN:  Customer is paid a pre-fixed tariff for the energy exported. Customer will have to still pay Utility fixed tariff for the energy consumed

(II) Gross Meter :

In this case, the entire generated energy is exported to the grid. Customer is paid a pre-fixed tariff for the energy exported.

(iII) Captive Plant – NO Export :

In this case, customer decides to utilize the energy generated only for his building and blocks any export to the utility grid. This option is chosen to minimize or avoid paper-work. This option is implemented by placing a “Zero Export Device” or “Reverse Protection Relay” at the grid-termination point,

c) Grid Connected system can be implemented either as Rooftop System or Ground Mount System

d) Many times, very large-scale Ground-Mount Systems (MW scale) directly export the generated energy to the Grid.
